Entertaining software for people with multiple learning disabilities

Many popular computer games and entertaining multimedia products used by friends and family are not accessible for disabled people. We started this project to investigate solutions for adapting standard games to the needs of disabled users. The project involved cooperation between MediaLT, commercial game producers and different centres of expertise within the field of IT and the disabled. The project was funded by the Norwegian Research Council, IT funk, Microsoft and Electronic Arts.
An important part of our work was the setting up of guidelines to test standard games, and guidelines for the development of new software. We were also very interested in developing new products for users with more severe, complex handicaps. This resulted in the universally designed Norwegian online music game “HeiPipLerke”.  The project finished in September 2006 after a period of three years.
