Hyphenation

Hyphenation can be used to make the right margin more even. You can use automatic hyphenation, or you can manually hyphenate text. When you use automatic hyphenation, Word automatically inserts hyphens as they are needed. With manual hyphenation Word searches for the text to hyphenate and asks you whether you want to insert the hyphens in the text.

Hyphenate a document

To hyphenate the entire document make sure that no text is selected. Choose the Page Layout category, then Hyphenation from the Page Setup group. Or press Alt+P, H. Choose Automatic or Manual from the menu, or Hyphenation Options to set the size of the hyphenation zone.
To hyphenate part of a document select the text first.

Insert an Optional hyphen

Optional hyphens decide where a word will be broken if it appears at the end of a line, for example enter-ing and not ent-ering . Optional hyphens can only be seen when you turn on Show/hide formatting marks (Ctrl+Shift+8).
Place the cursor in the correct position in the word and press Ctrl+-.

Insert a Non-breaking hyphen

Non breaking hyphens prevent hyphenated phrases from breaking if they fall at the end of a line of text, for example test-001. Instead the entire item will move to the beginning of the next line. Place the cursor where you want to insert a non breaking hyphen and press Ctrl+Shfit+-.
